EVERY TIME SOMEONE BRINGS UP THE LIBRARY OF ALEXANDRIA I GET SO ANGRY.
Because it got burned. All of that knowledge, lost forever.
The library was destroyed over 1000’s of years ago. The library consisted of thousands of scrolls and books about mathematics, engineering, physiology, geography, blueprints, medicine, plays, & important scriptures. Thinkers from all over the Mediterranean used to come to Alexandria to study. Most of the major work of civilization up until that point was lost. If the library still survived till this day, society may have been more advanced and we would sure know more about the ancient world.
Are we all just going to ignore that stupid fucking graph?
>”Christian dark ages”
Oh, sorry about those barbarians sacking Rome. Totally our fault.
Let’s just all ignore the Byzantines, and Arabs who took over after them. And Asia. And the fact that if it wasn’t for Catholic monks, all of the knowledge and culture from Rome would have been lost.
Not to mention that the “dark ages” still had lots of developments in science and engineering in Europe, despite people trying to convince us all that Europe contributed nothing significant until the Renaissance.
It really pisses me off though, how all the world’s knowledge just simply vanished when the Library of Alexandria burned. Imagine how different history could have been if all that knowledge survived.
Did it, though? I mean I’m sure that it really slowed things down, but it only collected knowledge. It was a library, not research center. If someone from Rome dropped off a scroll, the scientific developments are still known within the donator’s group. It’s just that he doesn’t have easy access to what all the other groups are doing, so everyone was on their own.
